Here at Hope Biblical Counseling Center we get to counsel many double minded men and women.  James 1:8, A double minded man is unstable in all is ways.  For those of you who are counseling or thinking about it, when you try to instruct a double minded person Biblically, they are always trying to rationalize what you are saying and then put a spiritual spin on it!  Rather than being willing to really hear their need and submit to the truth of God’s Word.

Double minded people are easily upset especially when they hear something they do not want to hear.  They are generally unfocused, emotion led, and doer mentality people.

Hebrews 3:7-8, Wherefore as the Holy Ghost saith, Today if you will hear his voice harden not your heart…  A double minded man has blind spots in his or her life because of hardening their heart to the truth of God’s Word on subjects they do not want to hear. The question to ask ourselves is, are we really hearing His voice today or just what we want to hear? A doer mentality person (double minded) only hears what they want to hear not being willing to listen to truth (hardening the heart).

In Biblical counseling, (we do not use psychology) the question needs to be am I just willing to put on a front to protect my blind spots rather than to really listen to the voice of God and apply the Word of God to my life? Many folks are deceived by their blind spots and really think they are growing spiritually, but are really only playing a part of being a Christian rather than truly submitting their life to God.

James 4:7, Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

What are our blind spots?  They are the lusts of our life that we choose to live for rather than responding to the Holy Spirit.  I must be content to walk in the Spirit, trusting in God’s will!  I must learn to trust God at His Word at the point of impact. The reason I am not consistent in my relationship with God is this – when my old nature tempts me with some lust, and I do not immediately turn it over to God by trusting that His will is best, then I will become covetous of that lust.

James 4:1-10, From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? (2) Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. (3) Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. (4) Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. (5) Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? (6) But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. (7) Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (8) Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. (9) Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. (10) Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Romans 6:11-19,  Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. (12) Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. (13) Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. (14) For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. (15) What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. (16) Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? (17) But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. (18) Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. (19) I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

They are emotion led people who are really just looking for the next thing to make them happy rather than really submitting their life to the Spirit of God and walking in the faith of God’s Word. Sadly, they teach their children to be spiritually unstable without even realizing what they are doing.  Why?  Because they consistently live in the moment. These are “moments” when they are not responding spiritually to their lusts by turning them over to God immediately. They are unfocused in that moment. (Social first people are very much in the moment people). All the guards go off their life for the moment! Emotion led people put off spiritual truth for the time being and then later think they are now ready to live the Christian life again. (Double minded).

Pride is always behind the double minded person and his or her blind spots of rationalization. The definition of pride is I believe in the moment I can live independently from God and “do it” myself.

James 4:6, But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

Galatians 6:7, Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption (destruction)…

Change can come to a life who chooses to really submit rather than live for themselves in the moment(s). Unfaithful people live for their moments being deceived about their spiritual condition and really think they are faithful.

Our goal in Biblical Counseling is always spiritual and emotional maturity of the individual. Carnal people and spiritually and emotionally immature people are easily offended and only focus on having a relationship with God when they are not living in their “moments”. They never see the forest for the trees! They always see negative first! Their double minded life is not focused on having a servant’s heart.  A person with a servant’s heart looks for ways to serve not for ways to be spiritually and emotionally immature and not serve. A double minded carnal person is someone who always focuses on the negative and always comments about it!  God wants us to be a powerfully positive Spirit controlled person for Him.  Focus on your walk in a positive light.  Be all you can be for God each day rather than the person who can never see or do the great things for God because you are focused on you rather than being the powerfully positive servant God wants you to be. Serve where you are with the right Spirit.  Be a good testimony for God rather than a failure of carnality.

I love working with people who are making a real effort to grow by dealing with their lusts, desiring to learn, and to have a real positive desire to serve.

Psalms 9:10, And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

The key is really seeking the Lord.

Let me give you a thought to think about.  Allowing God to use you as a servant means I have to have the right heart and spirit. Ask yourself the question is my heart and spirit useable for God?  Am I a double minded person? Or am I hindering my ability to serve because my focus is in the wrong place?

A double minded man must learn how to have a real, intimate, personal and passionate relationship with God.  If you want to learn more about this click on,
