Thank you for reading today. Our greatest desire is that you would be encouraged in the Lord! In my daily time with God in His Word today, the Holy Spirit spoke to me about those who quit when things get difficult. This has been a subject in our Biblical Counseling program that we find is an issue for those who come for Biblical Counseling. Right now it is a difficult time for many around the world because of COVID-19.  Lives lost, jobs lost, fear, distrust, despair, discouragement, difficulty in finances and not knowing what the future holds. Folks are being self-quarantined at home.  While we thank the Lord for the electronic ability to communicate, it is still not being able to meet together as believers in the local church for fellowship. We need the fellowship of God’s house. Yet we do have to be safe. People are under a lot of pressure.  Maybe today you just feel like quitting. Quitting on God, your marriage, your job, your church, or just quit period!
Our desire is to be an encouragement and help to those who need help. I have often told people that as a Biblical Counselor. That is, the number one thing that I do as a Biblical Counselor and Marriage Speaker is to try to help people to move people out of a feelings dominated controlled life and into a controlled by the Holy Spirit, Biblical principled driven life.

Sometimes life can be very hard.  There may be someone out there today who is just discouraged to the point of not wanting to live. Let me tell you that is never an answer.  God does not want that for you. If you need help please contact us.

Sometimes people can be horrible, mean, ungrateful, uncaring, self-centered and rationalizing their own sin to make your life miserable.  God does not want you to quit, but trust Him.  Everybody is vulnerable to the quitting syndrome especially when they are not focused spiritually or hurt badly.

If I ask you if you wanted to be a quitter today, the answer may be no.  But on a given day that might not be true.

As a pastor for more than 41 years, I have observed the dropout rate in the church to be huge. Many things can be behind it, but the real answer is that most folks just quit.  I have found that most people think about quitting for a while before they actually do. So, they have already quit in their mind.  Things are too tough for them so they look for a way out. Sometimes even stating that it is the will of God for them to quit! Just because they do not want to take care of responsibility. So, what do we do here?

First of all, do not focus on the negative by looking backwards.

Many people who quit spend a lot of time looking backwards.  They look back to the world. In our Biblical counseling program we see people who came in with their lives a mess.  When they make good progress, then something happens.  A relationship issue, a difficulty of some sort and they look backwards to how they used to make life work.  Sadly, they move backwards to a mess again. They get sloppy in their thinking and again go back to feelings led life rather than being a Spirit controlled person.  You can hear it in their voice, see it in their decisions, and watch the disaster that takes place. They are deceived about their direction.

Galatians 6:7-8, Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.  (8)  For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

Peter is an Example

John 21:1-3, After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.  (2)  There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.  (3)  Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.

Peter got impatient and tired of waiting.  Have you ever noticed that many people quit because they are impatient rather than trusting God?  Here Peter took others with him when he quit. Did you notice it did not work, because they “caught nothing?”  Quitting never works!

The Lord wanted Peter to know here that without Him he could do nothing.  He could not go back because he would never be even a good fisherman.  Discontentment is a big focus with quitters.

Secondly, many people get discouraged easily because they are looking for the wrong things.

If you are following the Lord today for any other reason but love you will wear out.  Most people who quit do not have a real, intimate, personal, and passionate relationship with God. They are focused on “what they can get out of it”, rather than have a servant’s heart.  A servant’s heart only comes when we have a real submitted relationship with God.

Romans 12:1-3, I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  (2)  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.  (3)  For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

James 4:6-8, But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.  (7)  Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  (8)  Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Thirdly, do not spend your time comparing yourself with others

Remember Christianity is a real, intimate, personal and passionate relationship with Jesus Christ.

II Corinthians 10:12, For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

This is not a contest of “I am better than he or she is”!  Don’t get focused on what others do or don’t, but focus on what you are spiritually. Then you will have strength for the journey. In one of our churches we had 13 ladies and girls who could play the piano.  Most pastors would love to have more than one person!  I am not sure that I ever heard so much grumbling and complaining about each other!  Hey, there is only one piano!  Sure we had some play special music, play for offerings, etc.  But you know what? There was only one piano and 13 people!  Comparing ourselves among ourselves, it is not wise and it leads to people getting discouraged and quitting!

The most important thing you can do is to have a real, intimate, personal, and passionate relationship with God. When the point of impact comes, and it will, stop, think and turn it over to God.  Don’t let Satan control your mind at the point of impact. Take control of your dark side! Focus on what you can praise and thank God for rather than starting the seeds of quitting! Remember this – God loves you so much and He wants His best for your life.  The choice is yours. Submission or quitting!

Remember, be the vessel God can use today by asking the Holy Spirit to show you if you are living your life by not dealing with your sin (lusts).  Are you living in the sin of allowing selfish carnal thinking, spending, or listening to rule your life and making you react or rationalize your sin? Maybe you are afraid because you do not know how to change. That can be fixed!

Be all you can be for Him today and have a powerful testimony of living a Spirit controlled yielded godly life that is serving and living with humility, joy and peace! We encourage you today to make Jesus Christ real in your life by humbly yielding to Him at the point of impact and living for Him, not the life of selfish carnal thinking and speaking. It is an important choice! Tell God you want to yield yourself to Him today and be a trusting, useful, and rewarded servant! Be the person who wants to change!  Be the person who can help others change! Do not be the person who talks the talk but does not walk the walk!  If you do not know what it means to be a Spirit controlled person, we encourage you to go to our bookstore at and get the booklet, How to Have a Real Relationship With God-The Work of the Holy Spirit in a Person’s Life.

We pray for many of you daily!  May we all humble ourselves before God and focus on having compassion for others!  Let’s seek real Biblical change. May we all have the desire to make real Biblical long term change to the honor and glory of God!
